How Calming Ocean Sounds Can Aid Relaxation And Sooth Stress

By Linda Ruiz

With the ever increasing pace of life, more and more people are looking for ways to relax and ease their stress. A convenient, inexpensive way of doing this is by listening to recordings of the natural world. Calming ocean sounds and other natural 'music' has a wonderfully calming effect on the mind, body and spirit, and is an ideal way to provide some much-needed harmony for the stressed and overwhelmed.

One way in which they can be of benefit is as an adjunct to activities like yoga, pilates and meditation. Huge numbers of people are now turning to these practices and are discovering a new-found balance and peace of mind. Many are also recognizing how much more they can get out of these practices when listening to the sounds of mother nature.

For example, with meditation the aim is to slow conscious thought processes and reduce the amount of 'chatter' that so disrupts the mind. Many people find this to be immensely challenging since emotional turbulence agitates the mind. Nature's sounds help meditators to relax, thus calming the emotions and the mind, making the whole process easier and more enjoyable.

It's a similar story with yoga. Stress and emotional anguish disrupt one's ability to focus and perform each pose to a high standard. Relaxed practitioners are able to have an experience that is significantly richer and deeper. Over the long-term, they are better able to reap lasting benefits in terms of skill, satisfaction and peace of mind.

These effects come as no surprise to scientists who have researched the effects of nature's sounds. Studies have shown that they can help people recover from stress more quickly and easily. Even the non-scientists among us know at an intuitive level that these sounds can have a calming, restorative effect. We all have a primal response to the natural environment, and it's effect on us can be profound.

This is perhaps seen most markedly in its effects on small children. There's something about the sounds of the natural world that connects with children at a very deep level. Babies can often be calmed beautifully by natural sounds when everything else has failed. A child put to bed in a room with birdsong or similar playing softly in the background will often drift off to sleep quickly and easily.

Their use is not limited to babies, either. Many adults use these recordings as an aid for falling asleep. Natural sounds can help folks fall asleep faster and enjoy deeper, sounder sleep. They are also popular simply as a way to create a relaxing atmosphere in the home. A recording of springtime for example, can create a superbly relaxing atmosphere that blots out the stresses of modern life and restores a sense of well-being.

Teenage and adult students can benefit from these recordings, too. Those who need to concentrate will find that nature's music is a lot more conducive to study than most pop music! Students who are relaxed and focused during their study time are far more likely to retain what they learn than those who are distracted.
